Controlling Rifle Recoil With the Sling Tab

Stay on top of rifle recoil while shooting from cover or barricades

No matter the caliber of your weapon, unless you are shooting a .22 the chances are there is going to be some kickback on your rifle. Even with attachments like LPVOs and other optics, you still run the risk of missing shots. When shooting from cover or a barricade, whether that is around a hallway corner in some form of close quarters combat, or over some sort of barrier like the side of a building trying to hit targets at longer ranges, the chances are that you need to be as accurate as possible. That being said, equipping an attachment like Core Vision Training’s new sling tab to help stabilize your rifle when shooting from cover can be extremely beneficial.

That’s right, Core Vision just came out with a new product, a sling tab, which is designed to effortlessly keep your shots on target when firing from cover or some other sort of barricade. Let’s break it down.

What is the Sling Tab?

A sling tab is a new attachment from Core Vision to help you improve your aim when firing from cover, whether that is a door frame, tree, car tire, or whatever you are posted up behind. The sling tab is a small attachment that goes right on the sling of your rifle, no matter the style, AKs, or ARs, anything in between, you name it. The sling tab is designed to easily stabilize you when shooting from cover, and even allows you to stay slightly more hidden than if you were to use an attachment like a foregrip and try shooting from cover. A sling tab is a small rubbery grip that you would use to push forward on the sling, and hold it against the wall or whatever cover you are behind, to control the recoil of your rifle

It helps to stay hidden as now you are only revealing the barrel of your rifle and whatever is on the muzzle, as well as one quadrant of the body if you are peeking out from cover. If you are using a foregrip or just holding the handguards when shooting from cover, you have to have both hands visible from your position, which can mean your entire upper body is exposed depending on the angle. If you are in a firefight, this could lead to injury. Even with equipment like ballistic helmets and body armor such as bulletproof vests and plate carriers, you still want to stay as hidden as possible when shooting from cover.

Also, when shooting from cover without a sling tab, you may be left holding your rifle with just your hand and pushing on the handguards. This leaves a lot of room for rifle kickback, as there is not as much tension as there would be with a tight sling and a sling tab attachment.

That being said, it can be largely beneficial to incorporate a sling tab. So, how does it work?

Controlling Recoil With a Sling Tab

Now, you may be wondering how a sling tab works, does it replace a foregrip? No. A foregrip can still be equipped as this will provide good grip and recoil control when shooting on the move or from a position of not being behind cover. A sling tab will instead go on the sling of your rifle, and be used when you are shooting from cover to control your recoil.

How it works is when you are by a corner, or behind a barricade, you would press the sling tab up against the cover. This creates tension and reduces the recoil of your rifle. The tighter your sling, the more tension. However, you do not want your sling to be too tight, as this can cause maneuverability issues, it can get caught on your chest rig, and this can be a real issue especially if you have to switch to your sidearm or not.

Sling Tab vs. Regular Foregrip

Now, let’s take a look at a direct comparison of another common stabilizing device that would be in a similar position as the sling tab, which is the common foregrip. The foregrip goes on handguards of your rifle, and is used to help control recoil. Now, when firing from cover, the last thing you want is to be inaccurate or overexposed. With a standard foregrip, you risk both of those issues becoming a reality.

A foregrip is good for moving and shooting, but when firing from cover may not be as stable as you’d like, and can cause some issues, as where you would place your hand during shooting can be a bit awkward and not have enough tension.

On the other hand, when it comes to using a sling tab, this will have you hitting bullseyes every time when shooting from cover. It provides great tension, enabling you to hit your shots from cover flawlessly.

When to Use a Sling Tab

You may be wondering if you have to be in a firefight and shooting from cover to reap the benefits of a sling tab, and that does not have to be the case. Sure, it is a great tool to train with and familiarize yourself with, but you can also use a sling tab as a tool to assist you in your hunting ventures. For example, if you spot a deer, you can press the sling tab up right against the side of a tree as long as you have a clear shot.

When using a sling tab in training, it helps you to familiarize yourself in the process of shooting from cover. You can run from barrier to barrier, practicing bringing your rifle up, pressing the sling tab against the side of the barrier, and firing. This can be extremely helpful in high-stress situations, as when your heart rate is up and adrenaline is pumping, your accuracy may experience a slight decline.

Training

All that being said, equipping a sling tab is absolutely useless if you are not training with it and familiarizing yourself with how to use this attachment. Tactical training is largely important, as it helps to get you used to your gear. Think about it, your firearm is going to be a foreign object to you if you are placed in a situation where you need it, but have never fired it. If you do not train with it and familiarize yourself with your gear, they will feel like foreign objects when it comes time to use them.
